Kim Kardashian advocates for the release of Erik and Lyle Menendez, reigniting attention on their case following her prison visits and highlighting new evidence she believes could be transformative.

The Menendez brothers, convicted in 1996 for the brutal murder of their parents, have found themselves back in the public eye, partly due to Kardashian’s vocal support in an essay for NBC News and the recent Netflix series Monsters. In her essay, Kardashian describes her interactions with the brothers, painting them as “kind, intelligent, and honest men.”

She questions whether the justice system would have shown more leniency if the Menendez brothers had been sisters, pointing to family testimony that outlined years of abuse the brothers endured at the hands of their parents. Despite this, the public and legal system remained skeptical.

“Robbed of their childhoods by their parents, then robbed of any chance of freedom by a criminal justice system eager to punish them without considering the context or the ‘why,’ Erik and Lyle were condemned before the trial even began,” Kim Kardashian wrote.

The renewed push for a reexamination of their life sentences stems from the discovery of a 1988 letter Erik Menendez wrote to his cousin, detailing alleged sexual abuse by their father. This new piece of evidence is central to Kardashian’s call for justice. As a law student and advocate for criminal justice reform, she hopes it will prompt a fresh review of their case.

“We owe it to those little boys who lost their childhoods, who never had a chance to be heard, helped, or saved,” she wrote.

At the time of the murders, Erik and Lyle, then 21 and 18, claimed they had endured years of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse, a defense central to their trial.

The case has taken on new urgency as the Los Angeles District Attorney has granted a court hearing in November, sparked by this recent evidence against their father, José Menendez.

Reflecting on the larger significance of the case, Kardashian concluded, “We are all products of our experiences. They shape who we were, who we are, and who we will be.”
