The parents of late Migos rapper Takeoff are battling in court over the distribution of proceeds from a confidential wrongful death settlement reached after the artist’s fatal 2022 shooting, with each side advancing competing arguments over entitlement and jurisdiction. TMZ broke the news on Wednesday.

Court filings show that Takeoff’s mother, Titania Davenport, and father, Kenneth Ball, disagree over how settlement funds should be allocated and which court should oversee the matter following the resolution of wrongful death litigation in Texas.

Takeoff, whose legal name was Kirsnick Khari Ball, died Nov. 1, 2022, after a shooting outside a Houston-area bowling alley. He was 28 years old.

According to recent filings, Davenport argues that she maintained a close and continuous relationship with her son throughout his life and served as his primary caregiver from birth. She contends that she raised the rapper as a single parent, provided nearly all financial support during his childhood, and continued assisting him as he pursued a music career.

Davenport further alleges that after achieving commercial success, Takeoff provided substantial financial support to her. In court papers, she states that he purchased a home and vehicles for her and covered many of her living expenses.

She also challenges Ball’s claim to settlement proceeds. It was asserted that he provided “negligible financial support and effectively no emotional support” during Takeoff’s lifetime.

Ball maintains that he is entitled to a share of the wrongful death recovery despite involvement in his son’s upbringing. Court records indicate that he is seeking to have the allocation dispute resolved in Texas. The wrongful death case was litigated and ultimately settled.

Davenport opposes that request. She argued that Georgia is the proper forum because probate proceedings concerning Takeoff’s estate are already pending there. The Texas litigation has effectively concluded.

The court has not yet ruled on how any settlement proceeds should be divided between the parties.

The amount of the settlement has not been publicly disclosed. The dispute remains pending.
