Lil Yachty is making headlines after calling Black Lives Matter (BLM) a “scam” during a recent appearance on YouTuber Quenlin Blackwell’s feeding starving celebrities series. The rapper, whose real name is Miles Parks McCollum, made the remark after Blackwell asked how much he donates to charitable causes. When she mentioned BLM as an example, Yachty didn’t hold back, saying, “BLM is a scam.” Blackwell responded with, “Clip that,” a phrase often used to encourage viral moments online.
He doubled down on his stance, citing concerns over how BLM funds were used. “BLM was a, it was literally a scam,” he continued. “They had bought mansions.” His comments reference a California property the organization called its “creator’s house,” which sparked controversy over financial transparency. In a 2022 statement, BLM defended the purchase, stating that it allowed Black people to own land without interference from white corporate interests. The organization pushed back against criticism, calling it a double standard rooted in racism.
Yachty’s remarks come as Washington, D.C.’s Black Lives Matter Plaza undergoes reconstruction. The plaza, renamed by Mayor Muriel Bowser in 2020 following the George Floyd protests, has remained a focal point for activism. However, Rep. Andrew Clyde of Georgia recently introduced a bill threatening to cut federal funding to D.C. unless the plaza is renamed. Bowser dismissed the effort, saying, “The mural inspired millions of people and helped our city through a very painful period, but now we can’t afford to be distracted by meaningless congressional interference.”
