During a recent Instagram Live, M.I.A. shared with Jaguar Wright that she was pushed into a settlement with the NFL.
The British rapper alleged that Jay-Z and Roc Nation played a role in pressuring her, likening the situation to slavery. She stated, “I was fighting giants. At that time, Jay-Z, Roc Nation was supposed to negotiate that. They wanted me to sign this thing, which was slavery.” “It was modern day slavery where the NFL takes 100% of my earnings.”
The NFL sued the singer for $16.6 million after her infamous middle finger during the Super Bowl XLVI halftime show, headlined by Madonna. ESPN reported that the league quickly filed a claim with the American Arbitration Association, demanding $1.5 million one month later. Performers at the Super Bowl are bound by strict contracts that impose heavy fines for non-compliance with league standards. When negotiations stalled, the NFL filed again two years later, adding $15.1 million to its demand. In 2014, the singer’s lawyer, Howard King, confirmed to ESPN’s Darren Rovell that a private settlement was reached with the league.

M.I.A. Revisits Shocking NFL Lawsuit and Jay-Z’s Controversial Advice in 2018 Interview
In a 2018 Huck Magazine chat, M.I.A. touched on the alleged NFL agreement once more.
She voiced, “If you’re talking about racism and sexism, [the lawsuit] showed the cracks in everyone I knew.” “I was at Roc Nation at the time and Jay-Z was managing me. The lawsuit was so ridiculous, it proposed that they would keep one hundred percent of my earnings for the rest of my life if I ever earned more than $2 million dollars. Jay-Z was, like, ‘You should sign that shit’ and I was, like, ‘No.’” M.I.A. revealed during an Instagram Live session last year that Jay-Z suggested she undergo plastic surgery during their initial meeting.
