M.I.A. recently took to Instagram to voice allegations against music icons Adele, Beyoncé, and Jay-Z. In a video uploaded by livebitez on November 30, M.I.A. expressed frustration over being overlooked in the music industry. “I find it difficult that when people make it, they all can turn around and thank Beyoncé, because that’s fu***d it, and enough is enough,” she said. “I’m fu****g coming for everyone now. And even Adele, because she’s retired now, but her career would not exist if I hadn’t made Jonathan Dickens into a manager, who is her manager.”
M.I.A. went on to explain how her involvement paved the way for Adele’s career, referencing Jonathan Dickens and Nick Huggett, who played roles in signing Adele to Excel. “When she gets an award, she thanks Beyoncé. And I’m sick and tired of all of the fu*king women who don’t want to give respect to me because I’m a brown woman in music,” she added.
The rapper also criticized Beyoncé’s radical and politicized career shift, suggesting her own influence went unacknowledged. “Beyoncé didn’t think about politics before me, and that’s true,” M.I.A. stated, drawing parallels to her own career trajectory.
M.I.A.’s discontent stretches back to her time with Roc Nation, Jay-Z’s management company, which she joined in 2012 but left in 2014 without explanation. Years later, she has blamed Jay-Z, Beyoncé, and Roc Nation for the decline of her career. In a series of tweets, she reflected on past experiences, claiming, “Jimmy Ivey didn’t care about streaming or digital music before he met me. Diplo didn’t think about Major Lazer before me.”
M.I.A.’s remarks also touch on a “Thank You Beyoncé” trend, a supposed conspiracy linked to Aaliyah’s death and the rise of Beyoncé as a music icon.
