Maino became the subject of light humor this week after casually acknowledging on a podcast that he has worn a hairpiece for several years. The exchange unfolded on the July 3 episode of Let’s Rap About It. During the episode, Dave East, Fabolous, and Jim Jones revisited old-school style before the conversation shifted toward Maino’s current look. What began as nostalgia around classic haircuts gradually turned into a more direct, and noticeably more personal, discussion.

Around the five-minute mark, Dave East asked when Maino first began using a hair unit. Maino answered without much hesitation, saying, “I got this about five years ago,” a response that quickly opened the door to more questions from the room. Fabolous followed up, asking where it had been purchased. This prompted Maino to say simply, “Online,” as the conversation leaned further into curiosity.

Jim Jones reacted with visible disbelief, questioning how the hairpiece managed to look so natural. “But how does it look so natural if you got it online?” he asked. Maino, laughing off the skepticism, pushed back lightly, replying, “See, y’all trying to trick me up. Listen, it’s a hairpiece, n***a,” keeping the tone loose rather than defensive.

Dave East and Jim Jones joke hair systems candidly

The joking continued as Dave East compared the process to ordering a fitted cap, turning the conversation toward sizing and customization. Jim added, “What size you asked for? Pause,” and continued imagining the process: “How it come? Like, pause, a big piece and then you you cut it to the size you need?” Maino offered a more matter-of-fact explanation, saying, “You gotta see a doctor, bro. Get your piece first…My shit is installed.” Jim responded in kind, offering, “Pull up with the piece, then I’mma fit you up and get you right.”

Maino is far from alone in speaking openly about hair systems among entertainers. Akon addressed his own maintenance routine during a March appearance on Big Boy’s Neighborhood and said he intends to launch a wig line. Furthermore, Akon shared, “I think people be so insecure with themselves to the point where they have to feel like they got to hide it. But there’s nothing really bad about it. I mean, you’re getting older,” he said.
