Former first lady Michelle Obama used the opening of the Obama Presidential Center on Thursday to celebrate her husband’s legacy while delivering a broader message about leadership, public service and civic responsibility.
Standing before a crowd that included former presidents, elected officials, entertainers and community leaders, Obama reflected on the achievements of former President Barack Obama and the values she said defined his eight years in the White House.
The ceremony marked a major milestone for the Obama Presidential Center, a long-anticipated project on Chicago’s South Side that the former first couple has described as a hub for civic engagement, education and community investment.
During her remarks, Michelle Obama praised her husband’s composure during some of the nation’s most challenging moments. She described Barack Obama as steady, disciplined and focused on long-term solutions, highlighting accomplishments that included economic recovery efforts following the financial crisis, expanded access to health care, support for the U.S. auto industry and the operation that killed Osama bin Laden.

As the audience responded with repeated applause, Obama continued listing achievements from her husband’s presidency before pausing and declaring, “I’m not done. Y’all. Not done.” The comment drew one of the loudest ovations of the event.
Although she never mentioned President Donald Trump by name, some political observers viewed parts of her speech as a contrast between different approaches to leadership during a deeply polarized political era.
Rather than engage in direct political attacks, Michelle Obama focused on themes of unity, public trust and service. She urged Americans to reject cynicism and remain active participants in democracy.
Later, Barack Obama delivered remarks centered on citizenship and democratic values. Reflecting on the nation’s founding principles, he encouraged Americans to stay engaged in public life and help shape their communities.
The event concluded with performances by prominent artists and tributes to the center’s mission. Michelle Obama emphasized that the institution is intended to serve future generations.
“This center belongs to everybody,” she said, framing the project as a lasting investment in civic participation and democratic engagement.
