New York City will host a ticker tape parade to celebrate the New York Liberty winning their first WNBA championship.
The celebration was announced by Mayor Eric Adams who said the parade would be held on Thursday at 10 a.m. Also, a special ceremony will take place at City Hall to honor the Liberty.
The parade will begin at Battery Park, then proceed to Broadway to City Hall, and through what is known as the “Canyon of Heroes.”
“The New York Liberty are champions – not just in the WNBA, but to each and every New Yorker who calls the five boroughs home,” Adams said. “This season, the Liberty beat the best of the best, secured the best record in the league, and, for the first time in franchise history, brought home a WNBA championship.”
The mayor also said that 125 sets of tickets will be available for the City Hall Ceremony.
Keia Clarke, CEO of New York Liberty, shared her excitement about the celebration.
“This Championship is not only for us and New York City – it’s for all Liberty Loyals and our Brooklyn community! We are honored to celebrate at the iconic Canyon of Heroes, and also come together with our passionate fans at our home in Brooklyn,” Clarke said. “The community in the borough has embraced us wholeheartedly since we began playing at Barclays Center and we want to share this moment with them.”
In one of best playoff series in recent years, the Liberty beat the Minnesota Lynx 3-2. The MVP of the Finals went to Jonquel Jones.
The Liberty will also host a celebration with fans at the Barclays Center on Thursday at 7 p.m. While the parade is open to the public, fans must claim tickets for the event at the Barclays.
