Lil Nas X caused a lot of controversies after he dropped his “Satan Shoe.”
The sneaker was an unofficial collaboration with Nike. The black and red kicks came with a bronze pentagram, an inverted cross, and a drop of real human blood. Only 666 pairs were made, sold for $1018 each, and sold out in less than one minute.
Lil Nas X joined forces with a New York-based art collective MSCHF, to drop the Nike Air Max 97s. Nike told CNN they weren’t involved in creating the modified sneaker. In a statement, Nike said, “We do not have a relationship with Lil Nas or MSCHF. Nike did not design or release these shoes, and we do not endorse them.”
People initially thought Nike was behind the release, but they made it clear they didn’t know anything about it. In the latest report, Nike settled with MSCHF for an “undisclosed amount.” Nike told XXL regarding the settlement:
“As part of the settlement, Nike has asked MSCHF, and MSCHF has agreed, to initiate a voluntary recall to buy back any Satan Shoes and Jesus Shoes for their original retail prices, to remove them from circulation. If any purchasers were confused, or if they otherwise want to return their shoes, they may do so for a full refund. Purchasers who choose not to return their shoes and later encounter a product issue, defect, or health concern should contact MSCHF, not Nike. The parties are pleased to put this dispute behind them.”
The publication also said MSCHF’s attorney gave them a statement:
The 666 shoes (665 of which were already sold and shipped to collectors before the temporary restraining order hearing last week) were individually-numbered works of art that will continue to represent the ideals of equality and inclusion wherever they are displayed.” They continued, ‘The artistic messages MSCHF hoped to share with these shoes were also powerfully communicated through Lil Nas X’s music video ‘Montero (Call Me By Your Name).’”
Lil Nas X apologized after the backlash and then trolled fans about it.
