Playboi Carti says he was banned from this year’s Met Gala. Taking to Instagram, the “Magnolia” rapper wrote in all caps: “MET GALA BANNED ME FELT LIKE WE GOT KICKED OUT OF PROM BUT WE GOOD [GIO] WITH ME IM A HAPPY MAN FuCK EM.” While Carti didn’t explain the reason behind the alleged ban, the move raised eyebrows, especially since his longtime friend A$AP Rocky served as one of the event’s co-chairs.
Neither the Met Gala nor Anna Wintour, the Vogue editor who oversees the high-profile fundraiser, has responded to the claim. If true, Carti would join the very short list of people barred from the Met, a group that includes figures like former president Donald Trump.
According to Billboard, this year would’ve marked a fitting debut for Carti, whose Music album set the tone in hip-hop earlier this year, debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and sending all 30 tracks onto the Hot 100. Still, the Opium Records head didn’t seem too bothered. Instead, he posted a photo shoot from his hotel room with Gio, where he sported a Chrome Hearts beanie and a leather look. The pair even recreated a famous 2018 hotel hallway moment originally captured by Kanye West and Kim Kardashian.
Despite the alleged snub, Carti seemed content. “MET GALA BANNED ME FELT LIKE WE GOT KICKED OUT OF PROM BUT WE GOOD [GIO] WITH ME IM A HAPPY MAN F*CK EM,” he reiterated online.
The Met Gala is famously secretive, with strict rules banning cell phones and smoking. Still, Megan Thee Stallion managed to sneak in her phone this year, capturing moments with Doechii and Angel Reese as they sampled hors d’oeuvres. Meanwhile, Carti continues to tease his next project, Baby Boi.
