Sean “Diddy” Combs remains in custody in New York City ahead of his sentencing hearing on October 3, as his protracted legal saga enters a critical phase. Federal prosecutors have filed a motion urging the court to deny Diddy’s request for acquittal or a retrial, highlighting the gravity of the proceedings.
Diddy’s defense had argued that his Mann Act conviction was atypical and unjustified. Prosecutors countered that the trial evidence strongly substantiated the charges, citing encounters described in court as “freak-offs” or “hotel nights” to suggest that Diddy leveraged video recordings to exert control over his partners.
As prosecutors noted, “Evidence during the trial firmly supported the jury’s convictions.” They outlined how Diddy allegedly influenced the personal and professional lives of those involved, claiming he dictated aspects of Ventura’s career, her appearance, and financed much of her living expenses, even withholding belongings to ensure compliance. They also cited Jane’s $10,000 rent, which he allegedly threatened to stop paying if she failed to follow his directives.
Defense Perspective
Diddy’s attorneys maintained that the relationships were consensual, involved adults who willingly participated, and had no commercial intent. They emphasized that the jury’s verdict confirmed the women were neither exploited nor victims of trafficking.
The defense argued, “Mr. Combs, at most, engaged in voyeurism as part of a consensual ‘swingers’ lifestyle, which should not be classified as ‘prostitution’ under a narrowly defined interpretation of the statute.”
Although Diddy was acquitted of sex trafficking and racketeering charges, he was found guilty on two counts of transportation for the purpose of prostitution.
