Queen Latifah will take the stage at the 97th Academy Awards to honor Quincy Jones in a special tribute performance. Executive producer Raj Kapoor confirmed the news during a press conference with the creative team. “One of the most exciting things that we’ve worked on this year is a musical performance that will tribute Quincy Jones,” he said, adding that Latifah will be “a part of the performance.” Earlier this year, Jones was recognized with a Governor’s Award. Kapoor described the tribute as a moment designed to “uplift the room” and celebrate Jones’ legacy. “It’s a beautiful moment, and we think it will be very celebratory and make everybody feel really good,” he said.
The night will also feature a show-stopping opening, with Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo performing a “Wicked” medley. Other artists set to perform include Blackpink’s Lisa, who currently stars in The White Lotus. Doja Cat and Raye will also take the stage.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences also announced that the Los Angeles Master Chorale will make a special appearance during the ceremony. Kapoor spoke about the overarching theme of the 2025 Oscars. The ceremony will celebrate community, spirit, and the people who work behind the scenes. He also emphasized that this year’s show will pay tribute to Los Angeles. “That’s a really important theme,” he said, acknowledging the hardships the city has faced. “We really wanted to create some really beautiful moments on stage that celebrate this amazing city that we live in.”
A charitable component will also be introduced, giving attendees the opportunity to donate if they wish. Host Conan O’Brien and the production team shared insights into this year’s immersive stage design, with production designer Alana Billingsley explaining, “We instantly wanted to wrap the room with the set, and bring the set out into the room.”
