R. Kelly is claiming his life is in serious danger while serving his 30-year sentence in a North Carolina prison, and now his legal team is urgently pushing for his release.
According to court documents obtained by TMZ, the singer’s attorneys allege there’s a murder-for-hire plot involving prison officials and an inmate, all aimed at getting Kelly killed behind bars. The alleged scheme comes from a sworn statement by Mikeal Glenn Stine, a terminally ill inmate and known Aryan Brotherhood gang leader.
Stine claims authorities offered him a chance to die a free man, but only if he carried out a hit on Kelly. According to the court docs, the plan was for Stine to kill the singer, take the fall, and then see the case fall apart due to “lost” evidence. He says officials even told him he could escape and remain free after committing the murder.
Back in March, Stine reportedly came close to carrying out the act. He approached Kelly’s housing area but ultimately backed out and exposed the plan, telling Kelly about it directly. Stine is now offering to take a polygraph test and testify under oath.
But Kelly’s lawyers say Stine’s decision to speak out has only made things worse. Now, according to them, another Aryan Brotherhood member has been ordered to kill both Stine and Kelly, and they allege the prison is full of others ready to follow through.
On top of the emergency motion for release, Kelly has also filed paperwork with the U.S. Supreme Court, asking for his case to be reviewed. He’s reportedly pushing for home confinement, not just for safety, but also to continue his music career. Still, based on these new claims, it’s clear he fears for his life now more than ever.
