R. Kelly may be locked up in prison, but that hasn’t stopped him from making his voice heard. The singer, who is currently serving time for federal racketeering and sex trafficking charges, made a rare appearance on the Inmate Tea with A&P podcast, where he treated listeners to snippets of his past hits. He sang parts of his 1998 song When a Woman’s Fed Up and his 2003 track Step in the Name of Love.
Despite his incarceration, Kelly remains deeply connected to music. “Singing is a beautiful disease that’s uncurable … I’m always singing,” he shared, adding that he’s written 25 albums since being locked up.
While serving his sentence in a federal prison in North Carolina, Kelly revealed that he’s actively working toward his release, saying he’s “using patience as a tactic.” However, his legal troubles aren’t over. Along with his 30-year federal sentence, he received an additional 20-year sentence in Chicago for federal sex crimes. A judge ruled that only one of those years would be added to his current sentence, with the rest running concurrently.
In February, a federal appeals court upheld his racketeering conviction and 30-year sentence, meaning Kelly is unlikely to be released anytime soon. Still, his attorney, Jennifer Bonjean, remains confident in their legal battle. She told TMZ, “I just visited with him yesterday and he was in good spirits. He is not a broken man and no one should count him out. Our appeals process has not come to an end. We will continue to fight for justice and for his freedom.”
Kelly has plenty of time on his hands. He could add another 25 albums to his catalog before he gets a chance to leave prison.
