Redman recently reflected on his teenage relationship with R&B singer Faith Evans and how her later marriage to The Notorious B.I.G. affected him. The Newark rapper admitted he felt a little jealousy when she began dating the late rapper. “When she started her relationship with Biggie, I was jealous,” he said with a laugh during a conversation with Acton Entertainment.
The two first connected through Redman’s sister, who was Faith’s best friend. Their romance began in high school, long before either of them had launched a music career. Redman described her as always having a special place in his heart. “Yeah, we were all young. Me and Faith was dating at a very young age before we got on. Way before. She’s always been a sweetheart to me. She’s always been my heart,” he explained.
When Redman began performing with rap duo EPMD, he hoped to involve Faith in his music journey. “She was and is still one of the best queens of R&B to me,” he said. “I wanted to put her on, but I was just getting on myself. I really couldn’t do too much […] At the time, we wasn’t doing R&B.”
As time passed, their paths diverged. Redman focused on touring, while Faith eventually started a relationship with Biggie. Reflecting on her choices, he expressed pride in her judgment and happiness for her. “When she dating Biggie, I was like, you know, Faith has always been a smart person, […] so of course she’s gonna move with good discernment. I was happy for ’em. I was really, really happy for ’em,” he said.
Redman also praised her accomplishments as an artist and a mother. “Then they had a kid and I was just amazed at her outcome, like literally getting on, being successful, being part of one of the hottest rap crews at the time. I was, ‘Wow, she’s doing her thing.’ So only thing I can do was salute her, pray for her and wish her the best.”
Faith had previously confirmed they dated in high school during her July 2018 Drink Champs appearance, giving fans context for Redman’s reflections.
