A California judge has ruled that Chris Brown’s legal history involving singer Rihanna cannot be used as evidence in an ongoing lawsuit regarding a 2020 dog attack. The decision marks a significant pre-trial victory for the R&B singer as he prepares to face a jury in a personal injury case brought by a former employee.
The lawsuit was filed by Maria Avila, a woman who previously worked as a housekeeper at Brown’s residence in Tarzana. Avila alleges that she was severely injured when one of the singer’s dogs, a Caucasian Ovcharka named Hades, mauled her while she was performing her duties. According to court documents, the incident took place while the housekeeper was attempting to take out the trash.
Avila claims the large dog repeatedly bit her, resulting in extensive trauma to her face, arms and torso. The injuries reportedly left her permanently disfigured and required significant medical intervention. While Brown has denied any legal responsibility for the encounter, Avila’s legal team sought to introduce his 2009 assault on then-girlfriend Rihanna to establish a pattern of behavior or character. Attorneys representing Brown argued successfully that the 17-year-old domestic violence incident is irrelevant to a civil case involving an animal bite.
They contended that mentioning the high-profile assault would serve only to prejudice the jury against the performer. The judge agreed, barring the plaintiff from referencing the Rihanna case during the trial. Brown has maintained that he is not liable for the housekeeper’s injuries, with his defense team suggesting that the dog may have been provoked.
The upcoming trial will focus on the handling of the animal and whether the singer failed to provide a safe working environment for his domestic staff. If the jury finds in favor of Avila, the “Under the Influence” singer could be liable for substantial compensatory damages related to medical bills and emotional distress.
No specific date has been set for the commencement of the jury trial, but legal experts suggest the exclusion of Brown’s prior history will shift the focus strictly to the owner’s responsibility regarding the specific dog involved in the attack. Brown has faced various legal challenges over the years, though he continues to maintain a successful career in the music and fashion industries.
