Social media had many questions over the weekend following the reveal that late rapper XXXTentacion, real name Jahseh Onfroy, murder suspect, Robert Allen IV, was released from prison on parole. As one of the three sentenced in the rapper’s murder, Robert accepted a plea deal for cooperation in 2018. He was the driver during the robbery-turned-homicide of the Florida rap star on June 18, 2018.

Allen, who cooperated with prosecutors during the high-profile trial, has been released after serving five years behind bars. His sentence stemmed from a plea agreement connected to the fatal robbery that ended the rapper’s life.

Robert Allen IV was originally charged alongside three other men accused of planning and carrying out the attack. The case centered on the killing of XXXTENTACION outside a motorcycle dealership in Deerfield Beach.

Prosecutors argued that the group targeted the 20-year-old artist after learning he was carrying cash earlier that day.

Allen eventually reached a deal with the state and agreed to testify against the other defendants. In court, he admitted his presence during the robbery and described how the group tracked the rapper before the shooting.

His testimony helped prosecutors build their case against the remaining defendants.

“I was there,” Allen told the court during the trial, acknowledging his involvement in the robbery that preceded the fatal shooting.

The trial concluded in 2023 when jurors found the other three defendants guilty of first-degree murder and armed robbery. The court later sentenced them to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Allen received a reduced punishment because of his cooperation. He pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and armed robbery, which resulted in a five-year prison term followed by probation.

The rapper’s death shocked the music industry and his fan base. XXXTENTACION, born Jahseh Onfroy, was emerging as one of hip-hop’s most polarizing and influential voices before his life was cut short.

Allen’s release has renewed discussion online about the case and the role of plea agreements in violent crime prosecutions. Some observers believe his testimony helped secure justice for the slain artist.

Others continue to question whether the reduced sentence reflected the gravity of the crime.
