Serena Williams Joins Ownership Group Of WNBA’s New Toronto Tempo

Serena Williams is joining the ownership group of the WNBA’s newest team, the Toronto Tempo, ESPN reports. The Tempo are the 15th team to join the WNBA and will begin their inaugural season in 2026. 

According to the team, Williams will “play a role in designing jerseys and creating merchandise collaborations with the team.”

“This moment is not just about basketball; it is about showcasing the true value and potential of female athletes — I have always said that women’s sports are an incredible investment opportunity,” Williams said. “I am excited to partner with Larry [Tanenbaum] and all of Canada in creating this new WNBA franchise and legacy.”

Williams also shared why Toronto is significant to her.

“Canada has always been a special place for me. I played my first professional tennis game in Quebec City. And I love Toronto — the culture, the food, the people,” she continued. “I won my first Rogers Cup here when I was 19.”

Team chair Larry Tanenbaum, lauded Williams for all of her accomplishments.

“Serena Williams is an icon, a role model and a force for change in the world,” Tanenbaum added. “She’s earned every bit of her incredible success with hard work, tenacity and determination in the face of countless challenges. She exemplifies the very best of what the Tempo stand for — we couldn’t be more honored to have Serena in our court

Regarded as one of the greatest tennis players of all time, Williams won 73 titles, including 23 major championships during her remarkable career on the WTA tour.

Along with the Tempo, Williams owns stakes in the Miami Dolphins, Angel City FC and Los Angeles Golf Club.
