Sinthoro Upper, a rising figure in New York’s rap scene, was shot and killed inside his Brooklyn apartment, police sources said. The artist, whose real name is Jamel Davis, was 43.
The fatal shooting unfolded Sunday during a heated dispute at the residence, according to early reports. Investigators say the argument stemmed from a disagreement over smoking indoors.
Davis was reportedly shot by his 16-year-old stepson, according to authorities. The stepson fled the scene. Police launched a search for the teen shortly after the incident and continue efforts to locate him for questioning.
“This is a tragic situation all around,” one law enforcement source said. “We’re still piecing together exactly what happened inside that apartment.”
Officials have not released further details as the investigation remains active. However, the case has already sparked concern about domestic disputes escalating into deadly violence.

Davis’ death comes at a critical moment in his career. His single “Slide” had begun gaining traction online, drawing attention from major names in hip-hop. 50 Cent was among those who co-signed the track, while Lloyd Banks and Rich the Kid also showed support.
“He was finally getting the recognition he worked for,” a close friend said. “The radio just started picking him up. This was his moment.”
Outside Davis’ home, mourners gathered in the days after the shooting. Candles, flowers, and handwritten notes lined the sidewalk. “He wasn’t just an artist,” one resident said. “He looked out for people around here.”
Neighbors and friends described Davis as a mentor figure who stayed connected to his community. “He gave the younger kids hope,” another local said. “That’s what hurts the most.”
As the investigation continues, Davis’ sudden death has left a void in Brooklyn’s hip-hop scene, cutting short a long-awaited rise.
