Suge Knight is breaking his silence from behind bars and he’s got surprising thoughts on Sean “Diddy” Combs and the explosive trial unfolding around him. In a special episode of Laura Coates Live: Diddy on Trial, the former Death Row Records boss spoke to CNN’s Laura Coates from federal prison in San Diego, where he shared his perspective on the federal sex trafficking and racketeering case against his former rival.

Despite a long and bitter history with Combs, Knight expressed an unexpected sense of empathy. “I mean, anytime somebody is fighting for their life and they have kids, you still got to show some type of, you know, sympathy for them,” Knight said. “He might have allegedly did a lot of things but I don’t want to see the children locked up, you know.”

Knight’s name came up earlier in the trial during testimony from singer Cassie Ventura, who described a 2008 incident where Diddy allegedly grabbed firearms and went looking for Knight after hearing he was nearby in Los Angeles. “I was crying,” Cassie told jurors. “I was screaming, ‘Please don’t do anything stupid.’”

Knight also weighed in on the dark party culture detailed in the trial, saying it mirrored what he saw as artists transitioned to major labels. “Once you open that door up and play with the devil, you’re going to become the devil,” he said.

While still critical of how Combs ran Bad Boy, “Once you start trying to be the star, that’s when the problem come in”, Knight believes the case may not stick. “If Puffy get convicted, Trump’s going to pardon him,” he said, noting the former president’s recent pardons. As for whether Combs should testify? Knight thinks he should: “He just have his faith in God, pull up his pants and go up there and tell his truth.”
