SZA and Chappell Roan recently came together for an open and emotional conversation in Interview magazine, touching on fame, vulnerability, and the weight of being seen. Their exchange offered a rare look into how both artists handle public perception and the emotional strain that comes with being in the spotlight.
Throughout the conversation, Chappell Roan was the one asking most of the questions, especially about SZA’s spiritual practices. But near the end, the roles reversed as SZA asked Roan how she manages to stay bold and outspoken in an industry that often punishes authenticity. Roan admitted that while criticism about her music never really fazed her, it started to hurt once the attacks became personal. “I didn’t, until people started hating me for me and not for my art,” she said. “They hate me because I’m Kayleigh.” While she acknowledged that those opinions are based on assumptions, the comments still affect her. “It’s like, ‘Damn. Am I the most insufferable bitch of our generation?’” she joked.
SZA was visibly moved by Chappell’s transparency. To her, it was a relief to hear someone else admit to caring deeply. “I felt like I was a punk bitch for feeling the way that I feel,” SZA said, explaining how isolating it can be to assume everyone else is immune to judgment. “But that’s not true.”
She also opened up about how exhausting it is to be frozen in people’s minds based on quick interactions. “You’re seen in these tiny vacuums of the most intense moments of your life,” she said. “People take that and build your identity.”
The two have expressed admiration for each other in the past, from social media shout-outs to dreams of collaborating. And while nothing official is confirmed, fans are definitely hoping they’ll team up soon.
