Tina Knowles is sharing a powerful and personal story about her recent breast cancer diagnosis. In an emotional sit-down with CBS Mornings co-host Gayle King, the 71-year-old matriarch of the Knowles family revealed she was diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer last year after doctors found two tumors in her left breast during a mammogram. One was benign—but the other wasn’t. “I’ve always tried to take care of myself. I just … was in disbelief,” Knowles told King.

She admitted the screening had been delayed due to the pandemic. According to Knowles, it had been years since her last mammogram. When she finally went in, doctors explained the cancer may have been caught even earlier, at Stage 0, if she’d kept up with routine checkups. Still, the cancer hadn’t spread and was considered slow-growing.

In August, Knowles underwent a lumpectomy and has since been declared cancer-free. She said Beyoncé, Solange, and close friends helped ease her nerves on the day of the surgery. “I was nervous,” she remembered, until Solange lightened the mood by playing a viral clip about the word “demure.” Laughter filled the room, and Knowles said, “I get out of my head. … Then I said, ‘I’m just so happy that y’all are here.’”

Before heading into surgery, Solange and Angie Beyincé sang “Walk With Me”, a song Knowles said gave her peace. “It’s about God walking with you into something and protecting you,” she shared tearfully. “And I went in there feeling just like God has got me.”

Later, she almost skipped Glamour’s 2024 Women of the Year event after dealing with a severe infection. Beyoncé insisted she stay home to recover. But Knowles went anyway. “This was my saying, ‘I deserve this,’” she said. The full interview airs April 23rd.
