Tory Lanez is set to return to court next month as he continues his legal battle to overturn his prison sentence. The rapper, who was convicted in 2022 for shooting Megan Thee Stallion after a 2020 party, will have his appeal heard on August 18th in Los Angeles.
Lanez is currently serving a 10-year sentence, but his legal team is pushing for a new outcome. A previous bid for bail was denied, with the court raising concerns about him fleeing or posing other risks. Still, the campaign for his release is gaining traction far beyond the courtroom.
Two political figures, former New Jersey Assemblyman Jamel Holley and Jack Brewer, a White House appointee, are now publicly advocating for Lanez’s freedom. Holley recently submitted a petition to California Governor Gavin Newsom, asking him to consider clemency. “I humbly implore you to exercise your authority… to grant clemency, correcting a grave injustice and safeguarding a life,” the petition reads. “Mr. Peterson’s conviction rests on unstable foundations.”
Brewer echoed that sentiment in a post on X, emphasizing Lanez’s role as a father. “As an advocate for 2nd Chance Fathers, I can’t stay silent about Tory Lanez,” he wrote. “This is another broken case that points to someone else, another father is lost to a system that rewards headlines over truth. Fatherlessness is destroying our nation.”
Lanez will have a chance at parole in late 2029. If that’s denied, he could remain in prison through 2033. Those closest to him, however, remain hopeful he’ll be released well before then.
