Trae Young Traded To The Washington Wizards

Trae Young is leaving the ATL and is officially headed to the nation’s capital.

​The Atlanta Hawks have traded the four-time All-Star to the Washington Wizards for CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert. Young will bring a veteran presence to an up-and-coming team. The squad includes Alex Sarr, Kyshawn George, Bilal Couliably, and Tre Johnson.

​Hawks coach Quin Snyder noted after Wednesday’s win against the Raptors that he couldn’t comment on the trade.

​”I know you all have questions for me right now. I’m not at liberty to talk about or answer,” Snyder said. The trade had not been approved by the NBA yet.

​On Jan. 5, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that Young and his agents were working with the Hawks on a potential trade.

​When Young was sidelined with an MCL injury from Oct. 31 to Dec. 14; the Hawks posted a 13-9 record without him.

​When Young returned from his knee sprain on Dec. 18 and played five games where the Hawks went 0-5. Young’s last game was on Dec. 27 before suffering a right quadriceps contusion.

​In his seven seasons with the  Hawks, Young established himself as one of the best players in franchise history. The Hawks acquired Young via a draft-night trade in 2018, kicking off a tenure where he earned four All-Star selections. He secured an All-NBA Third Team honor in 2022.

Young shattered franchise records to become the all-time leader in both assists and regular-season three-pointers. He topped the NBA leaderboards in total assists during the 2024-25 season. Young is the franchise’s all-time leader in assists and regular-season three-pointers made. He led the NBA in total assists during the 2024-25 season.

In 2021, Young led the Hawks to their first Eastern Conference Finals appearance since 2015. Throughout his time in Atlanta, Young averaged 25.2 points and 9.8 assists over 493 games.

McCollum, in his 13th NBA season, is averaging 18.8 points per game. He’s shooting 39.3 percent from 3-point range this season.

Kispert, in his fifth NBA season, is a career 38.3 percent 3-point shooter.
