Chicago’s indie band Pixel Grip, known for their 2021 single Pursuit, recently found themselves in the spotlight after alleging that Travis Scott sampled their track without permission on “Kick Out,” a song from his latest album, JackBoys 2.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the band voiced their frustration with what they described as an industry reluctant to support emerging artists. “Travis Scott sampled ‘Pursuit’ (without permission) in his new song ‘Kick Out,’” they wrote. “It’s perplexing to think how many influential figures know us but choose not to back us.” They went on to underline the challenge of building a career from the ground up, relying solely on underground momentum.

Yet, Pixel Grip made clear they’re not aiming for conflict. “Travis, or anyone on your team, if you’re reading this—I’m flattered by your interest. I’m not looking to create conflict; I’d love to have a conversation,” they added, signaling a desire for dialogue and resolution.

Sample Cleared for JackBoys 2 Track

In an interview with CBS News, drummer and producer Tyler Ommen described his reaction upon first hearing the track. “The moment I put on my headphones, I thought, ‘This is definitely a sample,’” he said. Ommen confirmed that Sean Momberger, a contributor to JackBoys 2, reached out directly to discuss sample clearance through their label.

“Kick Out” has quickly become a highlight from Travis Scott’s JackBoys 2, released this past Sunday. Its accompanying video, which followed shortly after, features uncredited ad-libs by rapper 21 Savage. The album marks the second collaborative project from Cactus Jack Records, showcasing artists like Don Toliver, Sheck Wes, SoFaygo, and Wallie the Sensei.
