Jordan Peele’s movie ‘Us’, made history in its first week, but now it is facing some heavy backlash from disability groups, who took offense to Lupita Nyong’o’s doppelgänger voice. The National Spasmodic Dysphonia Association (NSDA) along with some other groups, were not happy with Nyong’o’s impersonation of a person with a muscular disorder.
NSDA released a statement on this matter. “One of the toughest parts of having a disability is that people make assumptions based on the way you walk, talk or act, sometimes with the little understanding of what is causing it.” They continued to say, “We understand that hearing the unique sound caused by symptoms of spasmodic dysphonia was the spark of inspiration for the voice of this character. What is difficult for us, and for the thousands of people living with spasmodic dysphonia, is this association to their voice with what might be considered haunting.”
The outrage was sparked by these organizations, after Nyong’o reportedly told several of publications that she made the voice after hearing Robert F. Kennedy Jr. speak at a fashion event, who also suffered from Spasmodic Dysphonia.
