Victoria Monét is opening up about a painful experience she had while navigating pregnancy as an independent artist. During an emotional interview on iMo with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson, the Grammy-winning singer recalled feeling unsupported by someone on her own team after revealing she was expecting.
“Yeah, so when I got pregnant, I was an independent artist,” she began. “I was working with this company called Platoon, working out of the UK. And when you’re an artist, though you’re a human, you’re technically the business.”
Monét explained the emotional tightrope she walked—celebrating the blessing of motherhood while also feeling the need to apologize to her business partners. “It was a balance for me of being celebratory about it, but also kind of apologizing to my partners… it was a weird thing for me to try to navigate.”
But what hurt her most was a one-on-one Zoom meeting with a team member who laid out a PowerPoint presentation focused on the obstacles she’d face as a pregnant artist. “They made a PowerPoint presentation to me about how difficult it will be for me… and the finale of the presentation was, ‘What’s the rush?’” she revealed. “So it felt like an encouragement to get an abortion.”
Although Monét believes the person’s intentions weren’t malicious, she left the meeting feeling deeply hurt. “I walked out of that meeting with that same fight that I had when I left home, like, I’m gonna… nah, show you right. I’m gonna do this.”
Now, with the success of her hit “On My Mama,” Monét feels a sense of divine alignment. “It’s amazing that one of my biggest songs is ‘On My Mama’… it’s so full circle to my intention and purpose for having her.”
