Vince Staples dropped his eighth studio album, Dark Times, on Friday (May 24) via Blacksmith Records/Def Jam Recordings.
The album marks a new chapter in the artist’s career. It showcases dense lyricism over lush beats and offers wry, melancholic observations about life. It’s all about finding glimpses of light in a sea of darkness.
On Dark Times, Vince keeps guest appearances minimal, opting for samples, impromptu studio visits from friends, and a narrative outro by Santigold. The album features a thought-provoking excerpt from a 1973 conversation between Nikki Giovanni and James Baldwin, emphasizing the importance of Black love.
In tracks like “Government Cheese,” Vince dives deep into personal reflections, touching on themes of friendship, loss, and resilience. He shares intimate moments from his life, like his interactions with an imprisoned friend and the impact of his older brother’s passing.
But it’s not all somber tones. Vince brings celebratory vibes with tracks like “Étouffée,” a lively tribute to his Louisiana roots, and “Little Homies,” where he encourages the younger generation.
In “Freeman,” Vince exudes confidence as he reflects on his journey, from striving for success to finding peace with where he is now. He acknowledges the fleeting nature of life and embraces the uncertainties that lie ahead.
“Shame On the Devil,” the first single from the album, offers a glimpse into Vince’s introspective storytelling, exploring themes of isolation and personal growth.
To support the album, Vince will embark on his BLACK IN EUROPA TOUR, starting on June 4th in Köln, Germany, and making stops in Berlin, Paris, London, and more.
Dark Times follows Vince’s critically acclaimed 2022 album, Ramona Park Broke My Heart, which received praise from various music publications for its depth and authenticity.
In addition to his music career, Vince has ventured into television with the Netflix series “The Vince Staples Show.” The series offers a darkly humorous take on life in his hometown of Long Beach, California. It has garnered praise for its creativity and Staples’ compelling presence on screen.
