Thousands of Haitians arrived at the U.S.-Mexican border to find refuge in America.

They could not cross the border safely because the U.S. deployed agents that violently whipped humans trying to enter the “land of the free.” Human rights activists are condemning the agents. The Biden administration is facing backlash over their immigration policy.

Here are five ways you can help:

  • Educate yourself on what’s happening. Stay informed.
  • Spread the word.
  • Show up at the polls for state and local elections. HRW points out Haitians are being forced to return to their country due to a policy known as Title 42, “which singles out asylum seekers crossing into the United States at land borders.
  • Donate money, food, or clothes to organizations you trust.
  • Peaceful protest.

Activists are calling for the administration to put Title 42 to an end. Alison Parker, US managing director at Human Rights Watch, said, “This violent treatment of Haitians at the border is just the latest example of racially discriminatory, abusive, and illegal U.S. border policies that are returning people to harm and humanitarian disaster.”

Haitians returning home face civil unrest, violent crimes, and kidnapping. Their president,  Jovenel Moïse, was assassinated over the summer. Last month the country suffered a devastating 7.2 magnitude earthquake that leftover 650,000 people in need of emergency humanitarian assistance.
