Forbes released the list of Hip-Hop’s Wealthiest Artists of 2017. And there might be one surprise in there.
For the first time, Drake has hit the top 5. And the number one is in trouble.
He had a big 2016 with the release of Views which got over one billion streams and helped drive a huge world tour which was giving him about $1 million a night. He also has endorsements with Apple, Nike, Sprite that is bringing in some money on top and helped him get the number 5 spot with $90 million.
The rest of the list may have changed order, but have been the same artists ever since. Birdman is still making money with Cash Money records which has Drake, Nicki Minaj, and Lil’ Wayne which has gotten him to $110 million and the number four spot.
After that, the price tag goes WAY up. Dr. Dre hits the number three spot with $740 million as he still lives off of the Beats sale in 2014.
Jay Z’s different endeavors and investments have earned him the #2 spot for the first time. His TIDAL deal got a bump from Sprint, Roc Nation continues to grow, his Armand de Brignac champagne is still successful and with his new production deal he’s now worth $810 million just missing the number one spot.
For the first time in years, Diddy’s reign at the number one spot is in trouble. At $820 million, his dealings with Ciroc, Revolt, Aquahydrate, DeLeon tequila and of course Sean Jean he might end up being hip hop’s first billionaire sooner rather than later.
