New York Liberty To Host Annual ‘Juneteenth Unity Night’

The New York Liberty’s Juneteenth Unity Night fuses world-class women’s basketball and a celebration of Black culture. The Liberty will be facing the Washington Mystics.

​Juneteenth Unity Night (June 19) stands as a powerful testament to Liberty’s enduring commitment to social justice and cultural unity.

​Ahead of the game, the Liberty hosted the Unity, Justice & Advocacy panel on June 18 to discuss social justice efforts.

​For a special pregame performance, Urban Word NYC will give a spoken word performance.

Also, the Liberty partnered with NYC-based artist and graphic designer Olivia Ellis. She has designed a special merchandise collaboration for the event. During halftime, the Alvin Ailey dancers, Timeless Torches, and live drummers will all be performing.

​Shana Stephenson, Chief Brand Officer, shared the vision behind the night.

“Our theme nights are an opportunity to celebrate the people, cultures, and communities that make New York one of the most vibrant cities in the world. Juneteenth Unity Night is especially meaningful because it honors a legacy of resilience, achievement, and progress. While creating space for reflection, education, and celebration,” Stephenson said

“Black voices are an essential part of who we are – represented on our team, in our front office, and across the passionate fanbase that powers our organization. We are intentional about using our platform to uplift those voices through partnerships with local artists, community organizations, and cultural leaders. creating experiences that reflect the diversity, creativity, and spirit of New York while ensuring every member of our community feels seen, valued, and celebrated.”

Currently, the Liberty are on an eight-game winning streak, posting an 11–4 record. After shaking off a brief mid-May slump, the Liberty have recaptured their championship-caliber form. Led by Jonquel Jones, Breanna Stewart, and Sabrina Ionescu, the Liberty are undefeated 6–0 mark in Commissioner’s Cup play.

With their ticket officially punched for the Commissioner’s Cup Championship game on June 30, the Liberty are looking to be title contenders once again.
