Trick Daddy has come under fire for questioning why Black people in the United States are called African Americans.
In a video that went viral on social media, Trick gave his thoughts on the racial identity of the African Diaspora.
“I’m trying to figure out how ‘Afro’ get in front of my motherf**king race,” the 50-year-old rapper said in a video. “I ain’t never been to Afro-ca. I have never been to Africa. Afro or Africa. Never been there. I’m not from Africa.”
“[I] ain’t never went to Africa, ain’t thinking about going there,” he continued. “And I heard it’s a beautiful place, yes. And I know it’s the motherland, yes. But not my mother, not her mother, and not her mother’s mother, that ain’t their land. Americans’ real true land is right here, on U.S. soils.”
Many took issue with Trick Daddy’s comments and let him have it in the comments section of the video.
“As an African, feel free to drop the ‘African’ so you Claim ‘American’ and see how well that goes for you,” one user commented.
“You can tell who hasn’t traveled outside the United States,” another user argued. “Listen, they literally refer to you as “American”. It is only in America where you have to distinguish yourself as an African American.”
“People just be getting on the Internet embarrassing themselves. Kids stay in school and educate yourself. Plus we ain’t forgot about what he said about Beyonce,” one user said.
This is not the first time that Trick Daddy has made controversial statements about race and gender though he took a different route several years ago. In 2016, he described Black women as “useless” but showed love to Latina and white women.
“These Spanish, these white h*es, they just started getting finer than a motherf**ker,” he said in a video. “Y’all black h*es better tighten up. […] Y’all doing all that extra sh*t for nothing. You not achieving nothing, b*tch. You get y’all a** done, your titties done, y’all paying $150 to get your makeup done just to go to a local club, b*tchh. Tighten up, h*e. These Spanish and these white h*es getting very spiffy on y’all. They f**k around and learn how to fry chicken you h*es is useless.”
