Jason Mitchell inked a new role!

According to reports, former The Chi actor will star in a biopic about Sean Bell. Sean Bell was killed at the hands of police in 2006, hours before his wedding. The film is called 50 Shots, which represents the 50 bullets Sean endured in Jamaica Queens, NY at the hands of NYPD.

Sean was only 23 before he was fatally shot and was about to get married. The day he was killed, he was wrapping up his bachelor party with his dad and two friends until the police shot up their car. Undercover police were surveilling a nearby strip club and thought the men were armed, but they weren’t. Justice was never served for Sean and his family. In 2010, Sean’s family won a $7 million settlement against the city, but the three cops who shot Sean were fully acquitted.

Jason was interested in playing the role of a cop at first but then later asked if he could play Sean. No word on when it’ll be released, but it’s been in the works for the past three years. The film will take place where the shooting happened, in Queens.

Last year, things were rocky for Jason. He was kicked off of Showtime’s The Chi after his costar, Tiffany Boone, accused him of sexual misconduct. Then this year he was arrested in Mississippi for felony weapon and drug charges

Jason took to Instagram to share the news about his new role in 50 Shots. He said

“I’d like to give thanks to God.. the Bell family and my fucking guy @truvisionsfilms This is about to be epic.”

Complex reports Sean’s family has been heavily involved in the process of the movie. Jason said he talks to Sean’s dad almost every day since he joined the cast.
