Kehlani graced the April cover of The Advocate.

In the spread, the singer opened up about her sexuality, being a “queer musician,” and motherhood.

Throughout the years, Kehlani has been open about being sexually fluid. The “Can I” singer spoke on being queer and looks at it as a privilege. She said, “I think a lot of artists who we talk about and say, ‘Oh, they had to come out, or they had to do this,’ a lot of them can’t hide it. A lot of it is very [much] in how they present.” She went on to say that trans artists, Black gay man, and Black gay masculine woman face more challenges in the industry.

Kehlani is proud to be part of the new generation of artists that are unapologetically comfortable with their sexual identity. She said more people are willing to have conversations and are open to understanding. “So many people are willing to have teachable moments. That’s awesome because a lot of…hurt and anger in the past generations have been rooted in truly not understanding or not having access to educational moments,” the singer said.

She went on to say societal standards are “old and outdated.” When speaking on motherhood regarding her two-year-old daughter, she wants her to grow up feeling free from the shackles of doing what’s popular.

“I just want my daughter to know that it’s OK to feel you don’t agree with any of that, and it’s OK to march to the beat of your own drum.” She went on to say many kids grow up with big dreams but don’t know how to get there.
