Robert Kelly’s legal team is fighting hard to keep the R&B singer free.

Since R. Kelly didn’t show up to court for a civil suit last week, it resulted in a default judgment.

Heather Williams accused Kelly of sexual abuse. Back in February, she made claims that he abused her when she was 16.

Kelly was served with the papers for Williams’ case while he was in jail for unpaid child support. His legal team is claiming that their client was “overwhelmed” with his legal troubles, he didn’t know what he was signing.

Kelly’s attorneys, Zaid Abdallah, and Raed Shalabi claim that the R&B singer shouldn’t have been served papers in jail in the first place. They’re also claiming that since Kelly has a learning disability, he can’t read or write, he was unaware of what he was signing.

According to a source, “Kelly’s legal team is asking the court to vacate the decision … so he can properly mount his defense this time around.” R. Kelly is still facing 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse.
