Yesterday (Sep 18), many people’s childhood experiences were put in shock after writer Mark Saltzman from Sesame Street told Queerty that he believed Ernie and Bert were gay during an interview.
It brought social media into a whirlwind, and the conversation began.
Sesame Street didn’t wait long to react, as they released a statement shortly after the comments went viral denying that the two roomates are gay.

Another writer, Frank Oz discussed the characters, and repeated the comments that Sesame Street wrote.
It seems Mr. Mark Saltzman was asked if Bert & Ernie are gay. It’s fine that he feels they are. They’re not, of course. But why that question? Does it really matter? Why the need to define people as only gay? There’s much more to a human being than just straightness or gayness.
