Rema Opens Up On Creating Afro Rave Sound + Kendrick Lamar & Madonna Supporting Him

Nigerian superstar Rema sat down with DJ Drewski and spoke on his single “Calm Down” featuring Selena Gomez on the remix going number one worldwide. Billboard points out the remix debuted no. 91 on the Hot 100, giving Rema his first entry on the chart. 

During the conversation, Rema spoke on being a rapper before getting into Afro Beat. He told Drewski he wanted to study the industry before taking his career to the next level. Rema also spoke on wanting to create something different from the typical Afro Beat sound, which is why he dived into Afro Beat x Rave beats. 

Rema said, “There’s no Afro Rave without Afro Beats, it’s the mother tree” and he went on to say that Afro Beat is connected to everything. 

Rema explained how initially, people hated on the sound, but when other people tapped in, that’s when he started to see more people support. 

During the conversation, Rema spoke on getting support from Madonna and Kendrick Lamar.
