Celebrating the 20th anniversary of his debut album, Konvicted, Akon is using reflection to deliver a pointed message to the next generation.
During a recent appearance on the Won of One: A PLLRS podcast, the global star pushed back against the idea that artists can detach their personal lives from their public influence.
The conversation shifted after mentions of Lauryn Hill sharing a stage with Kanye West at SoFi Stadium and Ye’s canceled performance at Wireless Festival. For Akon, those moments underscored a larger truth: visibility comes with consequences.
“Sometimes, as artists, we get so arrogant to come out and say, ‘I’m not a role model,’” Akon said, rejecting a claim he believes ignores the scale of influence artists hold.

He pressed further, asking, “Do you know how many people actually look up to you?”—a reminder that celebrity status often shapes behavior, especially among younger audiences.
Akon’s argument hinges on responsibility. “The moment you decide to get into this realm… you now belong to the world,” he said.
He also tied success to purpose, adding, “Do you think this is a fluke?… God chose you. So, you have a responsibility.”
He closed with a caution rooted in industry history. Artists who reject that responsibility, he warned, often become case studies in rapid decline.
In Akon’s view, longevity depends not only on hits, but on how artists handle the weight of influence that comes with them.
