ESPN reports that Bronny James Jr, the Los Angeles Lakers rookie and son of LeBron James, will split time between the NBA team and the organization’s G-League team for the rest of the 2024-2025 season.

LeBron and Bronny made history this week as the first-ever father-son duo to play together in an NBA game. Bronny, who was drafted in the second round, will enter the G-League’s South Bay Lakers after the NBA organization’s road trip.

The Lakers and Bronny’s representative, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul, discussed various developmental strategies with NBA teams during Bronny’s pre-draft process. Sources indicate Paul advocated for a standard contract—not a two-way deal—showing a clear commitment to Bronny’s growth. Selected by the Lakers with the No. 55 pick in the second round, Bronny and his team welcomed the opportunity for him to develop within the G League. On media day, LeBron spoke on the alignment between the Lakers and their South Bay affiliate, expressing enthusiasm for Bronny’s growth, whether with the Lakers or in the G League.

“We just want to see him continue to grow as a basketball player,” LeBron said. “His job is to put in the work, like all of us, and hold himself accountable. We’re all one team—a reflection of South Bay, and South Bay is a reflection of us.”

The G League is essential. It allows them to gain valuable experience, coaching, and game repetitions in a structured environment. Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka and head coach JJ Redick have emphasized synergy between the Lakers and their South Bay team. Redick, who joined the Lakers with a vision for creating an elite player development program, said Bronny represents the first chance to implement his strategy.

“In terms of prioritizing player development, Bronny is case study number one,” Redick remarked in July. “His feel for the game, athleticism, defensive instincts, shooting, and passing all create a strong foundation. He’ll have a tremendous opportunity to develop as we build our program.”
