During an interview with Unc Spot, Cee-lo Green joined other celebrities who said they’d never been to a Diddy party. Tonii Boii, the podcast’s host, asked the Grammy award-winning entertainer about the speculation in an episode released on September 24.
The question arose while discussing Notorious B.I.G., Diddy’s former artist, and beefs in hip-hop. “You been to one of the parties?” Tonii Boii asked, alluding to a Diddy “Freak Off” party.
Laughing at the question, Cee-lo replied, “Uh-uh.”
In addition to discussing Biggie Smalls, Cee-lo attested to Diddy’s executive production outside the allegations as the mogul invited him to writing sessions early in his career. “I was still a little ‘green’ and awkward about it,” Cee-lo explained. “The invite – the opportunity itself – I didn’t know what that meant. I’m still not realizing my own potential. That’s why he is the executive, regardless of anything else. As an executive, he deserves that accolade. I can attest to that on a personal level because he came for me.”
Originally, Cee-lo Green rose to fame in the 90s as a member of the legendary group Goodie Mob, part of a collective called the Dungeon Family that included fellow Atlanta legends Outkast. While explaining the history, Cee-lo recalls almost signing to Bad Boy Records.
He added: “I almost signed to Bad Boy. I kinda don’t know why I didn’t. But I remember it was the Outkast listening party in New York. And it was our first time going to New York as a crew (Dungeon Family). We ended up going to the listening party, and BIG … they were previewed to them first snippets and stuff. And I don’t know how he knew the whole verse to ‘Git Up, Git Out,’ but he was right in front of the stage, singing word-for-word. And, I was like, ‘wow.’ He (Biggie) pulled me to the side after we got off the stage. He was like, ‘Yo, I don’t know what your business situation is like, but once you get your affairs in order. I want you to work with me on my album.’ And this album ended up becoming ‘Ready to Die.’ I don’t know how I missed out on the opportunity, but it is what it is.”
Ice Cube was the first celebrity to announce that he had never attended a Diddy party. The creator of Gangsta Rap addressed the controversy last month during a performance in Highland, California.
“Almost 40 years … Rockin’ the mic,” began the 55-year-old icon with his hype man WC. “And I’ma tell you right now, me and WC ain’t never been to a Diddy party, muthaf*ckas. You ain’t gotta worry about us on them muthaf*ckin’ tapes.”
During the interview, Cee-lo will discuss the Dungeon Family, Andre 3000, and his new album. You may watch the full interview below.
