Fabolous has received overdue acclaim as his iconic hit “Breathe” achieved platinum status nearly 20 years after its debut. The RIAA confirmed the milestone on Wednesday, November 27, marking one million units sold. Produced by Just Blaze, the breakout single from Fabolous’ Real Talk album climbed to No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 in November 2004, holding its spot for an impressive 20 weeks. Years later, Complex ranked it as the 60th best track of their inaugural (2002-2012).
Meanwhile, Fabolous joined fellow Brooklyn native Jay-Z in facing backlash over Kendrick Lamar‘s selection for the Super Bowl LIX halftime show. Critics including Nicki Minaj, Birdman, Juvenile, Cam’ron, and Master P argued that Lil Wayne, a New Orleans icon, was the obvious choice and questioned JAY-Z’s involvement through Roc Nation in shaping the lineup.
In September, Fab addressed the controversy while streaming live on Instagram. He stated, “I do see people blaming it solely on JAY-Z when I don’t think that’s the truth.” “I think it’s a committee, it’s a board, it’s different people who come in to play when decisions like that are made.”
Kendrick’s Feud Win Could’ve Tipped Super Bowl Scales
Fabolous, known for his collaboration with JAY-Z and Lil Wayne, reflected on how a Lil Wayne Super Bowl halftime show could have been iconic. However, he speculated that Kendrick Lamar’s decisive win in his public rivalry with Drake might have solidified the final decision.
He said, “I do think it would’ve been great for Lil Wayne to [headline the Super Bowl halftime show], just because of how much he’s done in the game and how much he’s meant to New Orleans. That would’ve been a great opportunity.” “You never know if he’s going to be included, if that’s something that was [discussed] behind the scenes.” Fab continued, “I think it was interesting that Kendrick got it after the Drake battle, too. I think that’s more something that should be talked about. His relevance is really up from that, so that could be something that tipped the scale.”
