Janelle Monáe didn’t hold back when calling out Nelly during a Grammys after-party in Los Angeles.

At Andy’s in West Hollywood, the singer and actor took the mic alongside Anderson .Paak and delivered an impromptu freestyle criticizing Nelly for performing at Donald Trump’s inauguration.

The two artists, fresh from the Grammys at Crypto.com Arena, took the stage for a medley of songs. When “Hot in Herre” came on, Monáe seized the moment, flipping the lyrics into a sharp rebuke aimed at Nelly. In front of a packed crowd, she rapped about her disappointment, making it clear she no longer respected the St. Louis rapper.

“I used to like Nelly,” she rapped, “but then he performed for Donald Trump. Fk that. Nelly, you sold out. I used to think he was cool. Fk you. Get a new attitude.” The crowd erupted, reacting to the fiery takedown.

Janelle Monáe, known for her outspoken activism, has long criticized Trump and his policies. Her reaction was unsurprising, given the backlash Nelly has faced since his decision to perform at the former president’s event. While many in the hip-hop community distanced themselves from Trump, Nelly defended his choice, insisting it was about patriotism, not politics.

“This is not a campaign trail,” he told NewsNation last month. “This is not about influencing people. It’s about the respect and honor of being invited to perform for what I like to call the greatest country on the planet.”

Despite the controversy, Nelly remains unfazed by the criticism. But Monáe made it clear where she stands.

Janelle Monáe performed an incredible Quincy Jones tribute. Honoring the icon’s memory with a performance of Michael Jackson’s melodies. Monae would also moonwalk across the Grammy stage wearing signature MJ attire.
