Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade are couple goals, but like any relationship, it’s not perfect.
The actress published an essay in Time Magazine as an excerpt from her new memoir “You Got Anything Stronger.” Gabrielle spoke on a topic she never addressed before, Dwyane’s now 7-year-old son, Xavier.
He was conceived in 2013 with another woman before the couple got married. Gabrielle said,
“It should go without saying that we were not in a good place at the time that child was conceived. But we were doing much better when he finally told me about the pregnancy. To say I was devastated is to pick a word on a low shelf for convenience. There are people—strangers I will never meet—who have been upset that I have not previously talked about that trauma. I have not had words, and even after untold amounts of therapy, I am not sure I have them now.”
The couple didn’t wed until 2014 and hit another hardship when trying to have a child together. Gabrielle suffered multiple miscarriages and was having a hard time getting pregnant. Bossip points out that her husband didn’t want her to use the drug Lupron to help her conceive because of the intense side effects of early menopause and brittle bones. She says his words made her feel like an “acknowledgment of failure” despite being meant out of “concern.” Gabrielle said,
“The experience of Dwyane having a baby so easily while I was unable to left my soul not just broken into pieces, but shattered into fine dust scattering in the wind. With desperate hands, we gathered what we could to slowly remake me into something new.”
In 2018, the couple welcomed their beautiful baby girl Kaavia via surrogate. Dwyane is also a father to Zaire, 19, and Zaya, 14, from his marriage to Siovaughn. He’s also his 19-year-old nephew Dahveon’s guardian.
