In his first cover story interview, Gunna addressed his relationship with a slew of former collaborators after his release from jail.
When asked about his relationship with Young Thug, XXL Editor-In-Chief Vanessa Satten received the reply from Gunna, “It’s the same. It’s love, always. Our relationship is our relationship.”
The majority of hip hop blacklisted the Atlanta rapper after being released from his involvement in the ongoing YSL Rico trial with “snitching” allegations. A number of Gunna’s past collaborators have released songs that include verses insulting him, making reference to certain allegations.
Gunna had notable fallouts with 21 Savage, Lil Baby, Drake, and Lil Durk. He denied being a snitch and said that the rappers who accused him of this are not part of the case and don’t know the legal situation.
“Don’t know legally what’s going on,” he told Satten.
He shared his thoughts on people’s perspective of the ‘snitching’ allegations and turned his back on Young Thug. He said:
“I definitely feel like everybody’s been misled. And like, you know, when you’re being misled, you got a choice to follow or make your own decisions. And that’s what is being shown right now. You’re being a follower or you’re being neutral to be like, ‘I don’t know what their business is or what they really got goin’ on.”
When asked if he has spoken to any of the former collaborators since his release, he said, “I talked to like, maybe like, two or three of those guys. I talked to them on the phone.”
Gunna, along with 27 others affiliated with Young Thug’s YSL collective, faced legal troubles in 2022. He was charged in a RICO case involving alleged gang-related activity and other crimes.
In the interview, Gunna talked about his new healthy lifestyle, recording music, and more. “I got a trainer,” he said. I work out six days a week. I eat better. I eat clean. And that’s something I’m disciplining myself to do every day. It’s something that I’m liking, though. I feel better when I work out.”
The new cover story supported the rapper’s announcement of his new album, One of Wun, on Monday. He has released two singles from the upcoming album: “Bittersweet” and “Prada Dem.”
Since his release from jail in December 2023, Gunna has released a highly successful album and collaborated with several Atlanta rappers, including Offset.
Gunna’s upcoming album will be supported by a nationwide tour this Summer.
