A new installment of the Friday film franchise may finally see the light of day.
According to Variety, Ice Cube has come to terms on an agreement to write and star in Last Friday with Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema. It will be the first film in the franchise since Friday After Next was released in 2002.
After years of the film being in limbo, Cube spoke about the progress of the project back in June 2024
“They have new leadership: my man Mike De Luca, who used to be at New Line when I first started, when I first did the first ‘Friday’ and ‘Players Club’ and ‘All About the Benjamins.’ Mike De Luca was there,” Ice Cube said at the time.
In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, New Line president, and CCO Richard Brener confirmed that the highly-anticipated film is on the way.
“We are making another Friday. We just closed a deal with Ice Cube to write and star. It’s going to be called Last Friday,” Brener said.
Ice Cube starred in all three films of the franchise including Friday (1995), which co-wrote with DJ Pooh, Next Friday (2000), and Friday After Next (2002). He also wrote the screenplay credits for both sequels. All three Friday movies were developed by New Line.
Along with the new Friday film, Cube is busing growing the BIG 3 Basketball league. Speaking with Brandon Scoop Robinson Radio, the “Today Was Good Day” expressed his excitement about the league having each team represent a city.
“Extremely excited! The league is growing and people have anticipated this season coming back around; the fact that it’s summer in the city meaning we’re planting our flag in 8 cities this year, hopefully it’ll grow from there, but we’re starting out with eight great areas and so, this is just what the doctor ordered,” Cube said. “ We knew in success this is where we want to be.”
Cube also has plans to make the league international with teams in different countries.
“That’s been a part of the overall long play. We’re going to Australia this year. We’re being hosted by the NBL (National Basketball League) which is a great Pro League in Australia; probably the second-best league in the world,” Cube added. “And so, to be able to play some exhibition games, we feel like we can hopefully start a BIG3 League in Australia one day — BIG3: Asia… and continue to add all these leagues all over the world and play in a giant tournament at the end. So you know, we got the long game as they say.”
