Kehlani’s 2026 BET Awards victory became even more meaningful after Jamie Foxx reflected on the singer’s remarkable journey from a hopeful teenager to one of R&B’s most celebrated voices.

After Kehlani won the BET Award for “Best Female R&B/Pop Artist,” she shared an intimate dinner toast from Foxx on Instagram. The emotional moment came after her acclaimed performance of “Folded,” which featured Foxx on piano and his daughter on guitar.

Foxx’s remarks revealed that his connection with Kehlani stretches back nearly two decades.

“She was 13 years old at my house. Nothing but her eyes wide open and wanted to share her talents,” Foxx said, recalling the first time they met.

The story echoed Kehlani’s own caption, where she remembered visiting Foxx’s Los Angeles home as a 13- or 14-year-old with her band. At the time, they believed they were meeting to sign a record deal. Instead, Foxx became an early mentor, offering encouragement and guidance that left a lasting impression.

“The whole time, he just thought we were amazing and wanted to guide us in every way possible,” Kehlani wrote. “You’re family to me forever.”

During his toast, Foxx reflected on the challenges Kehlani faced while building her career.

His comments framed Kehlani’s success as more than commercial achievement. They celebrated her ability to navigate the music industry while preserving her artistry and identity.

“We love you, we love your talent,” he said. “We’re glad that you survived the wolves.”

Calling the performance “orchestral” and “beautiful,” Foxx added, “You took it to a place, and we didn’t know that we could go.”

He closed the toast with a message that resonated far beyond the dinner table.

“You’re amazing, and you will continue to fight. Kehlani, it is your turn. A toast.”

For Kehlani, the award celebrated a career milestone. Foxx’s tribute honored the resilience, growth and artistry that made the moment possible.
