The documentary In Whose Name? will premiere in select theaters on September 19, offering a rare, close-up look at Ye (formerly known as Kanye West) during one of the most turbulent stretches of his career. Directed by Nico Ballesteros and filmed entirely on an iPhone, the project promises an unusually candid portrait of a figure whose every move has commanded attention—and sparked debate.

A newly released trailer hints at the breadth of the story. Viewers are shown glimpses of studio sessions with Drake and Pharrell, alongside deeply personal chapters such as Ye’s divorce from Kim Kardashian. The film also confronts his provocative commentary on Black identity, culture, and antisemitism—issues that have fueled both fascination and outrage in recent years.

Spanning six years, In Whose Name? traces Ye’s recovery following hospitalization, the creative heights of the Donda era, and the controversies that quickly followed. Among the touchstones: his Sunday Service gatherings, the ill-fated 2020 presidential bid, and the highly publicized ruptures with GAP and Adidas. Together, they form a portrait of an artist constantly navigating the tension between vision and volatility.

Where brilliance collides with controversy

The documentary attempts to weigh Ye’s artistic brilliance against the chaos of his public life. To detractors, his missteps signal recklessness; to admirers, they reveal unfiltered conviction. By revisiting these decisive years, the film may offer Ye an opportunity to place his choices—and their consequences—in a fuller context.

Lately, Ye has been spotted in quieter settings with his wife, Bianca Censori, though questions about new music and creative direction persist. In a tense conversation with DJ Akademiks, he hinted at frustrations still unresolved. Whether In Whose Name? will bring those conflicts to the surface remains to be seen.

With its unconventional approach and intimate perspective, In Whose Name? aims to capture more than an artist’s career—it seeks to chart ambition, collapse, and reinvention. For audiences, the documentary may do what Ye himself has long done: spark conversation about where genius ends and controversy begins.
