After a two-year break, Lizzo has made a vibrant comeback with her new single, “Love in Real Life,” released on February 28th. This track, which also serves as the title of her forthcoming album, pays homage to her late mentor, Prince, infusing his iconic sound into her music.
In a 2019 interview with NPR’s Terry Gross, Lizzo discussed her collaboration with Prince, reflecting on how their partnership influenced her artistry. She contributed vocals to “Boytrouble,” a track on Prince and 3RDEYEGIRL’s 2014 album, Plectrumelectrum. This experience left a lasting impact on Lizzo, shaping her musical direction and inspiring her to blend genres seamlessly.
“Love in Real Life” showcases this influence, featuring upbeat, funky production reminiscent of Prince’s classic hit “Let’s Go Crazy.” Lizzo sings about overcoming challenges to enjoy a night out, with lyrics like, “Tonight, I might make an appearance since I look this fine / And plus, it’s been a while.” The accompanying music video enhances this theme, presenting a cinematic experience where Lizzo embarks on a journey from introspection to a lively nightclub scene. The video begins with her contemplating the simplicity of life, stating, “Everything was so much simpler, and that’s exactly what I need. No views, no likes. Real love in real life.”
As the narrative unfolds, the video introduces an unexpected twist, with dancers transforming into mysterious figures. Despite initial apprehension, Lizzo embraces the moment, joining the dancers in a unified performance. The video concludes with a teaser of another new song, hinting at more exciting releases to come.
Lizzo’s return with “Love in Real Life” not only marks a new chapter in her career but also serves as a heartfelt tribute to Prince’s enduring influence on her music.
