Master P is speaking out regarding the recent 20-year prison sentence handed to his former artist, Mystikal, citing a lack of mental health resources and the dangers of self-medication as contributing factors to the rapper’s downfall.
During a recent appearance on the “We in Miami” podcast, Master P, born Percy Miller, addressed the legal fate of Michael Tyler, known professionally as Mystikal. Tyler was sentenced on June 16 following a 2022 incident at his home in Prairieville, La., where he was accused of sexually assaulting and torturing a woman.
Mystikal ultimately pleaded guilty to third-degree rape under a sentencing cap to avoid a potential life sentence for first-degree rape. Master P told the podcast hosts that while he respects Tyler’s decision to accept accountability for his actions, he believes the situation highlights a broader crisis within the Black community and the music industry.
The entrepreneur suggested that Tyler’s legal troubles are symptomatic of deeper, unaddressed issues regarding psychological well-being. “I don’t think he ever got the right medicine he need,” Master P said during the interview. “Drugs is killing our culture… they’re self-medicating.” He further emphasized that the stigma surrounding mental health treatment often prevents high-profile individuals from seeking professional counseling before their lives spiral out of control.
Despite the severity of the charges and the resulting sentence, Master P remained vocal about the legacy Tyler left at No Limit Records. Mystikal joined the label in 1996 and was a cornerstone of its commercial dominance in the late 1990s, releasing multi-platinum albums like “Unpredictable” and “Ghetto Fabulous.”
“Man, Mystikal has helped us build an empire,” Master P said, noting that he continues to honor the rapper’s musical contributions. He shared plans to bring Tyler’s son, Jimi Nu, on stage for tribute performances to keep the artist’s musical catalog alive while he serves his time. At his sentencing, Tyler reportedly expressed remorse, telling his victim, “If that’s what I did, I deserve every day of this sentence. I’m sorry. I hope you heal.” Although Tyler’s legal team briefly attempted to withdraw the guilty plea just days before the hearing, the 20-year term remained in place.
Master P concluded that while the situation is tragic, Mystikal is currently “where he need to be” to face the consequences of his actions.
