Shaboozey had risen to superstar status with the success of his number-one smash hit “A Bar Song Tipsy and his work on Beyonce’s acclaimed album Cowboy Carter. When it comes to navigating the music industry, Shaboozery said that “Queen B” gave him some life-changing advice.

“When I was recording the songs on her album, [I was like], ‘Oh man, I can’t do these runs’ or ‘I am nowhere near the vocalist, performer or anything Beyoncé is,” Shaboozey told PEOPLE. “And I kind of got in my head about that.”

“What they told me was, ‘Hey, we brought you here for you to do you, for you to be yourself,” he continued. The most important  lesson he took is to “ Just be yourself.”

Having confidence in your abilities is what changed the game for him.

“Just be confident in the fact that you are different, you are unique and that’s what people are going to resonate with,” Shaboozey said.

While discussing his music journey, he noted that along with hip-hop artists, he was influenced by legends such as The Rolling Stones, Waylon Jennings, Bob Dylan Johnny Cash.

“I would say Johnny Cash was someone that resonated with me very early on,” says Shaboozey. “Marty Robbins, too. I loved [him]. His voice was just so sweet and distinct. Marty was really cool, especially in my later years, and seeing the parallels between country music, storytelling, country music, and hip-hop.”

Shaboozey’s hit “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” landed at the No. 1 spot on the Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart. Eventually, the song spent 19 weeks topping the Hot 100 breaking the Hot 100 record set by Lil Nas X’s 2018 country hip-hop hit “Old Town Road.”

Capping off an incredible year, he performed with Beyonce on Christmas Day in Houston at the NFL Hafltime Show aka the “Beyonce’ Bowl.
